Help:Translation
Translation is going to be a big need moving forward. Unfortunately, I (Roger) can barely read or write French, so I'll need some help.
Translation Goals
The goals for this project are:
- To provide access to as much of Guattari's original writing as possible on the internet in hypertext format.
- To provide accurate translations of these texts into English.
- To have all explanatory material (such as pages like Félix Guattari) translated across both French and English and have accurate, up-to-date translations between versions as much as possible so to avoid situations where there is one language having considerably more information than the other.
- To allow for both English and French sources to contribute towards the wiki and influence each other.
In the future, other languages may be explored, but currently this project is in English and French only.
Procedure
The main procedure for adding or updating pages is as follows:
- When an article in either language is updated or created, place the article in the Category:Requires Import category. I will then add the diff to the other language article - the parts you changed. I may end up automating this in the future but for low volumes it is OK to do it manually.
- Once imported to the other language, the article will be marked with Category:Needs More Translation.
- Translators can go through these marked articles and translate the parts that need to be translated. Then, they can remove the article from the category. This should only be done when the entire article is translated. If an article is not fully translated, it should be re-marked with Category:Needs More Translation.
- Additionally, original French texts (such as Guattari's original writings) should have the original text included in all English language articles, marked with
Original
, and translations written separately in a section with a separate header marked==Translation==
.
This way, a one-to-one relationship between the two languages is maintained, and information isolation is reduced between languages.
To place a page in a category, use
on the top of the code, but change CATEGORYNAME to whatever your category name is.
Translating New Pages
New pages that are not translated should be tagged with Category:Pages Not Translated BOTH in English and French. This way they can be easily identified and added to the category. To add a category to a page, include
anywhere on the page (best on the top).
Pages should not be just direct translations but take into account the original French texts *before* translation by English translators.
Exceptions
Texts originally written in French or other languages should be kept in their original text in all Wikis. However, French texts can be accompanied by an English translation in a separate header on the page. Remember, this should be a resource where anyone, English or French, can look up an original text by its name and see the original text along with a possible translation. Original texts that need an English translation are in Category:Original Documents Not Translated. To tag an article with this category, you can put
on the top of the article.
Translation in Code
Sometimes text is in code or templates and needs to be translated. This is common on messages like stub, category or copyright messages. Drop a request on (Roger)'s talk page and I'll get onto it. Please provide the proper translation in your request since my French is not very good.
How to Connect the Wikis
French and English Guattari-Wiki actually run on two different servers - that's why they have a different amount of pages. First, make sure the page you want to link has the correct name. To add a language link to a page, include LANG:PAGE-NAME
anywhere on the page (best on the top), where LANG is the 2 character language code of the other language ("en" or "fr") and PAGE-NAME is the name of the page on the other wiki.
